Book Description
Robert Southey [1774-1843] poet of the Romantic School, close friend of Wordsworth and Coleridge. 1 page autograph letter with integral address panel dated May 17, 1820. To 'Charles B. Taylor of Montpellier Row, Twickenham'. {Possibly, the Rev. Charles B. Tayler - Southey's misspleinng? author of 'Margaret or the Pearl']. Dear Sir, I have read your poems. To a certain point all young poets however different they may be in power or in turn of mind are upon an equality. While they are young they can only prove that they possess the talent for versifying & the love of poetry. This proof you have given. Beyond this everything must depend upon the strebgth of the soil, & the manner of cultivation. In this & in every other pursuit wishing you all the success you deserve. I remain dear sir, yrs faithfully Robert Southey. I send this with a parcel which our friend Chauncey brought here thinking that it would reach you yesterday. Good condition, envelope folds.
