Dealer Notes
The sensational and bitter war of words sparked off by An Humble Remonstrance has tended to obscure the genuine achievements of ‘our English Seneca’ as poet and satirist. In it he took exception to a Puritan-supported plan to abolish the episcopal hierarchy of the Anglican church. In response, a group of Puritan clergymen writing as ‘Smectymnuus’ engaged him in a theological pamphlet war. Before long, John Milton joined the fray on the side of the Smectymnuuans and effectively wore down Hall with infamous and vicious attacks which ultimately cast aspersions on his character rather than addressing his points of argument.
Of the two variants (often mixed) this is, following ESTC, a pure form of the one with printer’s initials.
