Sharp had a number of religious and philosophical influences including Mesmer and Swedenborg, and he became a follower of Richard Brothers, visionary, and “Prince of the Hebrews” until the latter’s incarceration for insanity. Sharp seems to have transferred his interest to Joanna Southcott, and was her financial supporter in London. He made an engraved portrait of Southcott. When Southcott died , Sharp maintained his faith in her teachings, and wrote this work in her defence.
