Acclaimed roman a clef. By the beginning of the 19th century Almack’s – assembly rooms in St James’s - was at its height. People came to Almack’s to see and be seen, to assert their claim to be of the highest social rank, and to network with others of that caste. For gentlemen seeking a bride from ‘the ton’ it served as one of the leading marriage markets. A popular work, a key to the characters in Almack’s was published in the Literary Gaette for December 9th, 1826, and later issued as an offprint. The author’s only novel. Scarce.
