Book Description

Translated from the German by A. W. Wheen. London: Putnam, First Cheap Edition April 1930 [and] reprinted eleven times completing 394,000. Hardback – grey cloth with black titles, in dustwrapper. 320pp. 7.5 x 5.25 inches approx. (191mm x 132mm). Dustwrapper rubbed and worn to extremities and folds, very small loss to spine ends; spine discoloured and darkened; grubby and darkened to rear panel. Cloth clean with just a little discolouring to spine; spine with lean/slightly cocked; name in ink to front paste-down; foxed and offsetting to endpapers; foxed to preliminaries and final pages; tanned and spotted to edges of page-block with some encroachment on to margins however pages otherwise generally clean with just occasional dustiness or mark. Nonetheless, remains a particularly nice copy and uncommon to find complete with dustwrapper.
Dealer Notes
Circa 1937 printing (dated from list of previous works) of the hugely successful Great War novel. This copy features a different wrapper design to earlier printings which had a plain green wrapper with white lettering. The artwork to this wrapper is similiar in subject but somewhat different in style to the Paul Wenck wrapper of the US edition published by Little, Brown and Company. There appears to be an artist credited to the lower right-hand corner but unfortunately illegible.
Author Erich Maria Remarque
