N. from his friend and kinsman, Robt. C. Winthrop. Boston July, 1879." b/w. frontis. portrait of the author with tissue guard. Contents include speeches & addresses to the Massachusetts Historical Society on many subjects such as the 250th anniversary of the landing of the pilgrims, the centennial celebration of the Boston tea party & the great Boston fire. Also addresses to the Peabody Education Trust & other bodies.

First Edition; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; green cloth with bevelled edges & blind-stamped double outer borders front & rear; gilt titles spine; brown end-papers; slight crack to front hinge; includes appendices & index. Previous owner's name ink-stamped on front endpaper: "C. W. M. Swithinbank". (Charles Winthrop Molesworth Swithinbank, the British glaciologist & polar specialist, was a descendant of Admiral George S Winthrop the cousin of Robert C Winthrop)
