The artist and illustrator, Carol Barker (b.1938), painted the pictures to the earlier title, Achilles the Donkey (1962) and a story to them was then written by H. E. Bates (1905-74). For this second title, Bates wrote the story first , which was then illustrated by Carol Barker, later known for her London Transport posters. A third Achilles book followed in 1964.
