Book Description

Ariel Books, 1st Edition, 1st Printing in 1st State dust jacket. 13.9 x 21.1 cm blue cloth backed grey and white paper covered boards with gilt and orange titles to the spine. Uncut fore edge, [viii]211[3]pp in original unclipped jacket priced at $3.25 without the Newbery Medal on the front. The boards have fading to the spine tips of up to 2.5cm to match losses to the dust jacket. There is a little very faint discolouration to the front board and a 1cm drip mark to the rear. The corners are lightly pushed and just a touch rubbed. Internally there is a book stamp for Literary Agents D C Benson & Campbell Thomson Ltd and it is very likely that this copy was used by them to adapt the book for publication in the UK. There are a significant number of spelling amendments for example the addition of an ‘s’ to ‘math’ and an ‘u’ to ‘colored’ but also adaptations to make the book more readable like the use of ‘form mistress’ for ‘teacher’ and the consideration of whether, “ the planetary people for Eng. ed. shd. not use American speech.” The dust jacket which, is now protected in a removable clear cover (not shown), has a little dust staining and toning to the spine and rear panel. There is rubbing to the spine tips, corners and edges with a few very small closed tears of up to 0.5 cm, some associated creasing and loss of up to 2.5 cm to the spine tips and much smaller losses to the corners. All in all a really interesting 1st Edition, 1st Printing of this American classic which gives an excellent insight into the adaptation of the book for the UK market and in a scarce 1st state jacket.
