Book Description

4to, 20cm, 66ff (of which 11ff blank). Original quarter cloth and marbled boards (text block detached and loose in boards; binding extremities rubbed). The carefully curated scrapbook, which occupies some twenty leaves from the start of the book, is stuffed with a wealth of clippings relating to Sunderland antiquarian history covering antiquarian discoveries such as 17th century stepsto the residence of a Colonel Lilburne, discovery of Roman artefacts in the River Wear, discovery of an old roadway under a public house, histories of the founding of the monastery at Wearmouth, notes on executions in Newcastle and Northumberland AD705 to 1863, a history of pressganging in Sunderland 1665-6, a note on the early 18th c coal trade and much more. In addition to the commonplace book element, there are various items of loose printed ephemera which include “Historical Portions” from T.R.Dodd’s Sunderland Almanack, a handbill relating to Northumbrian and Durham tenant farmers association.
