Book Description

Hardback. Full leather, gilt decorated presentation binding. A biography of Llewellynn Jewitt who in 1860 founded the antiquarian magazine The Reliquary which he edited until his death but is perhaps best known for his work The Ceramic Art of Great Britain. THis fine binding edition was presented to Lady Colthurst with the author’s compliments. The slim volume in calf has a beautiful and detailed decorative deep border in gilt to both front and back, with inner border based on the Greek Key design. to the front there are also titles in gilt with ‘Llewellynn Jewitt’ in a gothic script. The slim spine has five gilt horizontal lines but was perhaps too narrow for further titles. Marbled endpapers. Gilt to all edges. Beautiful binding is very clean and both decorative boards are bright; there is a hint of faded to the narrow spine. Some slight foxing to prelims and to blank pages to the end of the volume. Text is clean. Binding is sound.
