Hardback. Unique hand-bound copy in full illustrated leather. A portrait of Lady Hester Stanhope, traveller, explorer, adventurer, archivist and archaeologist of the Middle East and niece of William Pitt, the British Prime Minister in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This extract from Alexander William Kinglake’s Eothen; or Traces of travel brought home from the East is published as a limited edition and is marked 295/300. Engravings by Robert Gibbings. The publishing history is given in an introduction. In later handmade leather binding with light and dark brown panelled leather to boards, with applied colour leather yacht design (taken from the Gibbings’ engraving on p. 18) to front with further detail blind impressed. Attractive gilt stars and spots decoration to spine and gilt lettering to leather labels on front. title page in red and black. Faint and tiny ink mark to front. some minor handling marks to back. Binding is other wise clean and sound and text is very clean and crisp. A very nice copy of the Libanu Press edition and Gibbings engravings in a unique binding.
