manuscript of a Christmas carol from the author of 'Onward Christian Soldiers'

Book Description
'Christmas Carol' [so titled] in manuscript [his own hand] signed by Sabine Baring Gould [1834-1924] Anglican priest, antiquarian, folk song collector, novelist and hymn writer, his most famous hymn being 'Onward Christian Soldiers'. Published in The Quiver for December 1902. Five stanzas on a sheet of paper signed 'S. Baring Gould, Lew Trenchard, N. Devon, July 19 1902' The first verse runs
"Stars are shining, winds of Winter
Whistle oer the frosted wold,
Around their fire, the shepherds dozing,
Flocks are crouching in the fold
Lo! the Heavens rent asunder!
Flashes forth a flare of gold
Gloria in excelsis Deo!"
The paper with mild foxing, few ink / pencil marks, with two date stamps '8 Aug. 1902' as if, perhaps recorded by the office of The Quiver. The sheet tipped onto an album leaf at the central fold. A remarkable discovery of a new Christmas Carol from this eclectic nineteenth century scholar.
