Book Description
81 hand-col lithographic plates, 1 double-page col map, vignette illustrations. Large 4to, cont. green morocco, gt, rubbed/scuffed to extremities, aeg, marbled endpapers, later cloth reinforcement to hinges. A few discreet marginal pencil annotations.

First edition. With an appendix on the etymology of the words Crocus and Saffron by V. C. Lacaita. Hand-coloured lithographic plates by F. Huth after Maw. George Maw (1832-1912) became the leading expert on Crocus, and he dedicated ten years to the production of this book. John Ruskin wrote of Maw's crocus drawings that they were 'most exquisite [..] and quite beyond criticism'.
