Book Description
Longman & Company, London. British Birds 1826 (sixth edition) in 2 vols and A General History of Quadrupeds 1824 (eighth edition) in 1 vol. 8vo in fours. pp. [2], [vii] - xliiv, [1] - 382 (Birds vol1); pp. [2], (iii) - xxii, [1] - 432 (Birds vol 2); pp. [2], [iii] - x, [1] - 526 (vol3 Quadrupeds). Three matching volumes in near contemporary calf by Mansell with gilt decoration. Six compartments to spines with contrasting Morocco title and author labels and gilt. Morocco title label lacking to vol 1. Books in very good condition with slight rubbing. Volumes 1 & 2 spines a little frayed at extremities and very slight stains/chips to localised area of boards. Very occasional light spotting here and there, small area of ink staining to upper corner of page xxxv otherwise very clean. Bindings all extremely tight & sound. A really delightful three volume set. (note: Nigel Tattersfield, 'Bewick's Illustrative Work' (p33) indicates that the eight edition of Quadrupeds bears an erroneous imprint 'AND SON" after TB's name - as in this copy. Quadrupeds did not form part of the partnership between TB and REB).
