Dealer Notes
The first one volume edition of the famous Dictionary, by Samuel Johnson. At the front it contains the Advertisement to Mr. Harrison’s Life of the Author, The Life of Dr, Samuel Johnson, the Editor’s Preface, the Plan of a Dictionary of the English Language and the original Preface (both by Johnson) and his History of the English Language and Grammar of the English Tongue. At the end is a short Supplement. The Editor’s Preface claims that this edition ‘Comprehends the Genuine Original Edition, printed verbatim, without the hosts of typographical inaccuracies mutiplied in subsequent impressions: and retains some hundred elucidations injudiciously struck out from all other editions; while it furnishes, in a Supplement of barely three pages, the boasted additional words...’ the Preface quotes a number of examples to demonstrate the fullness of his edition. Harrison’s is in effect the seventh edition of the work first published in 1775. (ESTC T116651; Courtney and Chapman, p. 57-58).
