Anthology compiled with a preface and notes on the origin of each carol and other comments regarding the poems by Henry Charles Beeching (1859 - 1919) British clergyman, author and poet.
Contains a first printing of a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins written in 1883 "Mary Mother of Divine Grace, compared to the Air we breathe", the longest and best of his Marian poetry, later titled "The Blessed Virgin Compared to the Air We Breathe."
one of the earliest of Hopkins’ poems selected for anthologies.
Also a first printing of a poem by Selwyn Image.
