Book Description

Roberts' election manifesto for the West Bromwich seat, focussing on welfare, housing and health issues. Roberts was elected and became Minister of Pensions in the first Labour Government. The manifesto is also interesting for the well-executed line drawings by George P. Micklewright, who went on to become a prolific book jacket illustrator. However, in his early twenties he had been a conscientious objector, and gained some notoriety as the artist of a 1917 series of postcards on the C.O. in prison, based on his experiences in Wormwood Scrubs.
