Book Description
This is a very nice Manuscript Album created in 1887 by Hamlet Watling (b. Kelsale, Suffolk, 1818, d. Ipswich, 2 April 1908) Hamlet was a well-known Suffolk-born antiquary whose professional career was as a schoolmaster. He devoted much of his life to recording antiquities and his work is mostly unpublished, but does contain many unique records. He conducted excavations and contributed to learned societies, and wrote lengthy weekly columns in the regional press over forty years, c1868-1908, this album is titled on the cover “The Antiquities of The Isle of Man”, done in 1887, running to 59 used pages, 47 of those are full page paintings of scenes and buildings on the island, measuring 14.75 inches by 12 inches approx., there is an inscription on the first page that reads, “This book was given to George Abbott by his old Friend Hamlet Watling in 1898”, with the paintings signed “H. Watling”, the book has a few pages that have been filled with ephemera, engravings and Newspaper clippings, a map of the island which has some loss &c, the rest with the paintings with various scenes of Peel Castle, The ruined Cathedral, The Round Tower, Tomb of Lord Bishop of Sodor, Corrin’s Monument, Runic Stones at Kirk Braddan, a Manx Cat, Sally Port, Castle Rushden Castletown, Fenella, Bradda Head Port Erin, a Treen Chapel, Rushden Abbey, Moores Tower, Sugar Loaf Rock, Calf of Man, Celtic Crosses, and Inscribed Stones, Runic Crosses, The Cloven Stones, Glen Maye Waterfall, and the road to the Waterfall, St. Trinian’s Church, The Manx Tynwald Hill called Cronk-y-Keillown, Glen Helen Waterfall, Ballaugh Church, Kirk Michael Runic Monument, a Manx Cottage, Niarbyl Point, Rhenass Waterfall, obn the beach at Glen Maye, and more. All the paintings are captioned, some with more lengthy descriptions, also features a small vignette painting to the front cover, , the covers are generally rubbed and lacks the spine covering, though boards still holding, contents in good general condition. a very nice manuscript record of a visit to the Isle of Man in 1887 by the well-known Victorian antiquary Hamlet Watling
