This is a very rare Certificate dated September 6th 1749 relating to the movement of Horned Cattle during the Cattle Plague of 1742-1760 the Certificate is worded as follows To all whom these may Concern, Thomas Salwey Doctor of Laws, One of His Majesty’s Justices of peace for the County of Hereford & Salop do hereby certify that Lady Charlton in the county of Hereford, of the parish of Ludford is the owner of a red Pyed Heifer to be sold to Thomas Whitmore of Apley near Bridgnorth in the county of Salop to be drove by T. Adams, and that it appears to me upon the oath of John Evans that the beast and the herd out of which the said beast was taken, is now and have been for the space of forty days before the date of this certificate entirely free from the distemper, or infection raging among the horned Cattle; and that the said beast has not to the best of the knowledge, and belief of the said John Evans been within one mile of any infected place Given under my hand and seal this 6th day of September 1749 signed and sealed by John Salwey there is an enclosed wax seal at the foot of the document, the document has been partially filled in by hand the certificate measures 7.75 inches by 6 inches approx. condition as seen A FASCINATING AND RARE SURVIVAL RELATING TO THE MOVEMENT OF CATTLE DURING THE CATTLE PLAGUE OF 1742-1760
