Book Description
Published in London by Charles Bill in 1699 this is a beautiful early “Book of Common Prayer”, bound in a very nice high quality recent full leather binding in the Cambridge style, with embossed patterned decoration to both boards, page edges gilded all-round, internally the book is rubricated in red ink throughout and wonderfully illustrated with forty four richly hand coloured illustrations with gold illuminated highlights, the hand colouring is of the period and contemporary with the age of the book the “Book of Psalms” is dated 1700, while the main title page for “The Book of Common Prayer” is dated 1699 7.5 inches tall approx. the binding is in excellent condition with just the mildest signs of wear, internally a few ink marks to reverse of frontispiece, old ownership name of a Mary Knapp, in very old ink to title page, one of the illustrations has been bound in very slightly off centre and the cropping has just touched a few letters of text along top edge, an original binders fault and nothing too serious, one outer page edge slightly worn along outer edge just affecting a small portion of the rubricated border but not the text a very old correction in very old ink where the word “Morning” has been crossed out and the word “evening” inserted in ink (pictured) a few other minor marks else the contents are generally in very nice condition
