red half leather with bright gilt titles & decoration to 5 raised bands; black title labels plus gilt volume numbers on spine; marbled boards. Written while on an extended tour of Northern India with her sister Fanny between 1837 & 1840, while her brother George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland was in residence as Governor-General of that country, these letters give a fascinating glimpse of nineteenth century colonial India from the perspective of the ruling class. Emily, a poet and novelist, was the great-great-great-aunt of Sir Anthony Eden &, though she never married, after the death of Caroline Lamb, mutual friends hoped she might marry Lord Melbourne, who had become a close friend, although she claimed to find him "bewildering" and to be shocked by his profanity.

Very Good Condition (light wear to outer edges; inner hinges starting but still very sound; tiny piece missing from top corner of rear e/p. in vol.2.& back marbled board of that vol. has some damage.)
