First Edition of Through the Looking-Glass in original cloth. (1872)

CARROLL. LEWIS.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, And what Alice found there.

Published: MacMillan and Co. London. 1872(1871).

Date: 1872

FIRST EDITION. Dated 1872 but actually published in time for Christmas 1871. 8vo. Illustrated with fifty engravings by John Tenniel. A Very good, clean copy with a few small ink spots to the fore-edge of the pages, only really noticeable when the pages are fanned, in publishers original red cloth with gilt lettering, decoration and ruling to the spine. Triple gilt ruled borders on boards which each have a circular illustration, of the Red and the White Queens, within triple lined frames. Dark green coated endpapers. Binders paper ticket (Burn & Co) on the inner rear board. Some splitting to the rear inner hinge which is still firm and tight. The front hinge firm and uncracked. All edges gilt. The boards are a bit rubbed & bumped to the edges and the spine is showing minor darkening but overall a very good copy of this famous classic which is a notoriously difficult book to find in nice original condition.

Provenance
Previous owners neat ink inscription, dated Christmas 1871, on front free endpaper - "Lizzie Hall / from her ________(?) / Alice Young. / Xmas 1871".
