Benjamin Lumley

Theatrical contract between Michael Costa and Benjamin Lumley

Date: [ 1845 ]

Michael Costa [1808-1884] Italian-born conductor who made his career in England & Benjamin Lumley [1811-1875]. A contract in French [with English translation] Two and a quarter pages small folio size, for Costa's services at Her Majesty's Theatre which was managed by Lumley, dated 23rd January 1845 signed by both men. Costa and Lumley worked well together for five years, a important partnership in London opera history, but latterly fell out, two years later in 1847 when Costa decamped to Covent Garden. A fascinating piece of Victorian musical history. Minor grubbiness along fold but really in VG condition.
