Note
Published one year after the release of the acclaimed “The Third Man” film directed by Carol Reed and starring Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles. The novella serves, as a way, as Greene’s “director’s cut” where he was able to expand and elaborate in ways he wasn’t permitted with the screenplay. Due to their connection with the well-known films, these novellas are presented by the publisher as “entertainments”. The book is dedicated “To Carol Reed in admiration and affection and in memory of so many early morning Vienna hours at Maxim’s, the Casanova, the Oriental”
