Published by the Folio Society, London, 2006, limited edition of 1000 copies. This no 116. Green leather spine, lighter green cloth boards. Gilt lettering on black leather patch. Front board foil blocked with a design by David Eccles based on plate 38 the Hawkmoth. Main book contained within a custom made clamshell box which has a hollowed out panel to contain the commentary volume. The commentary volume is bound in green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and a paper label to the front board (also numbered 116). The case has gilt lettering on a black leather label to the spine. Folio, 21.75ns x 15.5ins. Main volume contains 91 plates reproduced by digital photography from the album in the British Museum which was originally part of the Sir Hans Sloane collection. Each tipped-in plate is at least 13.75ins x 11.75ins. They show in vivid colour, the flora and fauna of this island (Dutch Guyana) and were painted in watercolour by Maria Merianbetween 1701 and 1705 based on the sketches and drawings made whilst she was in Surinam during 1699-1701. There are also 3 additional plates in an envelope (no 7 Blue Morpho butterfly, no 56 a water hyancinth with an insect and a frog and no 65 a Harlequin beetle with a orange-barred Sulphur butterfly). The commentary volume, by Julia Harvey measures 10ins x 6.5ins, has maps as endpapers and comprises 87pp. There is an historical background and a plate by plate commentary. Apart from a little bumping to the top rear corner of the case, the whole work is is in VG near F condition. A very heavy book, approx 12 kg pre-packing. Overseas postage would probably be very expensive.
