THIRD EDITION. 4to. (12 x 9.7 inches). viii, 492, 16pp index, directions to binder leaf at end. Illustrated with 22 copper engraved plates, many folding. Generally a clean and tidy copy in early brown calf boards which has been re-backed in brown calf, with raised bands and gilt rules to match and the original red title label re-laid. An interesting copy from the library of, and with the bookplate of Leona Baumgartner (1902 - 1991) New York City's Commissioner of Health from 1954 to 1962 when President John F. Kennedy appointed her to head the Office of Technical Cooperation and Research at A.I.D., making her the highest-ranking woman in the United States Government at the time. More importantly regarding this volume, she was also the author of JOHN HOWARD (1726-1790), Hospital & Prison Reformer: A Bibliography. 1939.
