The book follows the narration of a junkie, William Lee, who takes on various aliases, from the US to Mexico, eventually to Tangier and the dreamlike Interzone. The stories are drawn from Burroughs' own experience in these places, and his own addiction to drugs. Naked Lunch was included in Time magazine's "100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005." This classic novel of the 'Beat Generation,' which was not published in the U.S. until three years after its Paris publication, and not until a legal challenge to its banning was successfully defeated. Authors such as Norman Mailer testified as to the literary value and the accomplishment of Burroughs' work. It was a basis for the 1991 David Cronenberg film featuring Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, Julian Sands, and Roy Scheider. The book was considered "unfilmable" and Cronenberg acknowledged that a straight translation into film would "cost 100 million dollars and be banned in every country in the world".
