GORDON WELCHMAN'S RARE BLETCHLEY PARK ENIGMA BOOK (1982)

Welchman, Gordon

The Hut Six Story. Breaking the Enigma Codes

Published: Allen Lane

Date: 1982

First UK edition, 326pp, red boards with cloth spine, dustwrapper. A fine book (10 or so leaves a touch 'wavy') in a fine dustwrapper, the price on the front flap scored out with red ink. A very nice copy of a rare book, first published by McGraw Hill in the USA on 1 March 1982 and then in the UK by Allen Lane on 22 July 1982. Welchman was one of the leading Bletchley Park codebreakers and ran Hut Six which was tasked with breaking the German Army and Air Force Enigma codes. His book was controversial when it was published as much of the information it contained was still classified. Welchman, who was by then working in the USA, lost his security clearance as a result and, following pressure from the National Security Agency and GCHQ, McGraw Hill and Allen Lane removed the book from their lists.
