Published: London, The Nonesuch Press

Date: 1935

#547 of 675 copies. Greek blue quarter vellum by Bain, decorated with gilt wavy lines, over blue cloth. Edges untrimmed. Top edge gilt ‘on the rough’. With nine wood engravings by V. Le Campion and a series of new maps by T. Poulton. The spine is faded as usual. Very light foxing to end papers and the edges of the text block. Small book label of former owner on front paste down. A lovely copy of a book notoriously prone to fading and wear. Near fine.

Issued in a dust-wrapper, which is now missing, this copy benefits from a purpose-made slip case covered in matching blue cloth. Printed in the ‘Renaissance’ style with the text in Plantin framed by notes in Perpetua and Felicity. Selected for the 1963 Printing and the Mind of Man exhibition as one of thirty examples of outstanding modern fine printing. (Nonesuch 102).
