The first second and third volumes issued between June 1833 and May 1836 from Wortley Hall and bound as one, comprising over 900pps with 32 hand coloured plates, as called for... [ two folding] and occaisional text figures. Large 8vo.contemporary half leather very clean and sound but showing signs of restoration. No ownership marks. Joseph Harrison was born in Sheffield the son of Charles Harrison the earliest known head gardner at Wortley Hall, [a deer park est c.1500] Joseph suceeded him in that position when his father was appointed head gardner at Petworth House Sussex. He was influential in the establishment of the Sheffield Botanical Garden in 1836 and founder of some of the earliest popular gardening magazines collaborating with Joseph Paxton of Chatsworth. His most successful being the Floricultural Cabinet which flourished from 1833-1855. The present publication focuses on fruit & vegetables including the culture of the Pine Apple,Grape, Apricot, Peach, Plum, Pear, Cherry, Strawberry, Cucumber etc. A nice clean sound copy.
