CHANDLER, Raymond

The Big Sleep

Published: Alfred A Knopf, 1939

Date:

FIRST PRINTING, with the words "FIRST EDITION" printed on the copyright page, as called for. 8vo., 125 x 193, 277pp. Publisher's original light brown/orange boards and blue wash to top edge. The front board is a little dust marked around the edges and there are a couple of tiny dark marks towards the bottom edge. All fore edge corners are firm and square. The spine is a little toned and has two slight vertical ridges. There's a small mark on the shoulder just before the "C" of Chandler and a pinhole in the cloth of the upper joint. The binding is very firm and square. Internally, there is a previous owner name at the top of the ffep. There is a little acid migration around the edges of the pastedowns and ffep, occasional spots to the prelims and a few small spots at the top of the title page. There are sporadic light finger marks and spots throughout and three pages have corner creases from having been folded over. In all, a lovely copy of the author's first book in very good original condition.
