SOUTH. The story of Shackleton's last expedition 1914-1917.

Published: William Heinemann. London. 1919.

Date: 1919

FIRST EDITION. 1st impression. Large 8vo. (10.1 x 6.5 inches). Illustrated with colour photo frontis, five maps-including one large folding, and 87 mono photographic plates. A near very good copy with the page edges browned, as usual with this book. This first impression was printed on poor quality paper and is prone to browning. Original publishers dark blue cloth with silver illustration of The Endurance to front board. Spine and front board lettered in silver. Publishers blind stamped device to back board. Inner front hinge cracked but firm. Some rubbing to the extremities and remains of a repair to a split, about 1.5 inch long, to the lower rear outer hinge where a previous owner had placed a matching blue cloth patch which covered the first few letters of the Publishers name on the spine. This patch has mostly been removed so that the spine lettering is now readable. Overall an acceptable copy of this classic and fragile book.
