Post 8vo (95 mm); 345 pp; publisher’s original red cloth, lettered in gold on the spine, with printed paper title label to the front cover; spine and small area of the front board slightly sun-faded. A VG+ copy. Signed Presentation copy from HG Wells to his Essex neighbour, Samuel Levy Bensusan (1846-1917) with the following inscription to the front free endpaper: “a Small Boon in return for a great one / Reginald Bliss to S.L. Bensusan / Xmas 1915.”

Note
During the first World War Bensusan and Wells were near neighbours, with Wells living with his family on an estate at Dunmow while Bensusan had possession of a 50 acre farm near Great Easton, not far from Easton Lodge the home of Lord and Lady Warwick.
