Provenance
The new edition of the classic book celebrating the ancient offices of Britain has been commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation. Upon her accession, 60 years ago, Queen Elizabeth II inherited the most ancient office in the land. At her Coronation, the serried ranks of the realm gathered around her together held most of the other great offices of Britain: Archbishop and Admiral, Marshal and Minister, Chancellor and Treasurer all, in a sense, Keepers of the Kingdom. Not represented there but nonetheless each, at one time or another, playing an important role in the affairs of the country, were numerous other holders of titles, some quite humble, and it is these, together with the still powerful and relevant offices, that Keepers of the Kingdom celebrates. Keepers contains over 100 photographs, of which 45 are new and specially commissioned. These include: Her Majesty the Queen as Knight of the Thistle, photographed on location HRH the Prince William as 1000th Knight of the Garter, photographed in the Garter Throne Room at Windsor The Duchess of Cornwall as Lady of the Isles, photographed in the grounds of Birkhall The book also contains a special Diamond Jubilee portrait of Her Majesty in her study at Balmoral. In addition to these unique portraits of the Royal family, the new edition includes: The Perpetual Master of the Woodmen of Arden The First Sea Lord at Sea The Searcher of Sanctuary and High Bailiff of Westminster Abbey The Keeper of the Great Clock at the top of Big Ben Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. etc etc. Alastair Bruce's impeccably researched narrative traces the history of Britain through its ancient offices from before the Norman Conquest, through the Reformation and Age of Empire to the present day. Each office holder is beautifully photographed by Julian Calder and Mark Cator.
