Sense and Sensibility

Published: Richard Bentley

Date: 1846

11cm x 17.7cm brown publisher's cloth blind stamped to the front and rear boards and gilt stamped titles and 2/6 price to the spine. Rough cut edges, original yellow endpapers with a list of 117 Bentley's Standard Novels and Romances, Sense and Sensibility being No. 23. There is a binders label for Josiah Westley in the bottom spine edge corner of the rear pastedown, engraved frontispiece, xv, 331 (2) pp. A very good plus edition clean, with bright clear gilt on the spine. There are splits in the cloth along the very top and bottom tips of the spine. There is a hint of a bruise to the top fore edge corner of the front board and the cloth on the bottom corner of the front board is just rubbed through. Internally, the book is excellent. There are no names or inscriptions and hardly any marks. There is a very slight 1-2cm section of separation of the end papers along the front inner hinge but the binding is extremely firm. A very scarce edition as Gilson states; 'The Standard Novels issues… were frequently reprinted but… so few of these reprints survive in libraries and even fewer in original condition.' This conforms to the 1846 edition mentioned in D7. If you would like any further information or images, please do not hesitate to ask.
