Roland Penrose; Lee Miller [Rosamond Bernier]

Scrap Book 1900-1981 [inscribed and decorated by Roland Penrose with letters and photographs laid in]

Date: [ 1981 ]

Inscribed and decorated presentation copy of Penrose's visual autobiography with two letters (one illustrated), an illustrated envelope, a postcard and an original photograph of the the American art lecturer and memoirist Rosamond Bernier to whom the book was given. Penrose has inscribed the book on the half title 'for Rosamond and John', surrounding the printed title with an elaborate and original multi-coloured, colourful surrealist design. Otherwise the book is near fine in a very good dustjacket. Also a decorated letter, May 1975, from Penrose and his wife the photographer Lee Miller in which he congratulates 'Peggy' as she was known and 'John [Russell] of our hearts' on their impending wedding: 'what a gorgeous celebration for the two most wonderful people we know'. Penrose decorated this letter with sunshine and surrealist marginal squiggles and curls. A longer Christmas letter of 1981 from Penrose recalls 'enjoying the festive day... at your fireside with the Folies Bergere in the trees', mentioning a recent trip to Sri Lanka with his French lover trapeze artist Diane Deriaz. Most interestingly, Pennrose discusses recent work 'scratching away at my [Yves] Tanguy preface for the great show that Dominique is putting on at the Pompidoux in in the spring.' A large colour photograph of Rosamond Bernier by a fig tree is also included, titled by Penrose: 'A figurative picture of darling Rosamond turn over a new leaf. Farley Farm August 1976 with much love Roland.' Roland Penrose was a Surrealist painter an object-maker, a collector and art world grandee as well as a writer and organiser of exhibitions who was close to Picasso and married to the artists' muse and photographer Lee Miller. This presentation copy reveals real affection between Penrose and Rosamond Bernier.
