Wagner Festival

Photograph Album of the Wagner Festival, Bayreuth 1931.

Date: 1931

Photograph Album; oblolong folio; original cloth boards. A superb photographic account of a British couples journey from England via Belgium and the Rhine to Bayreuth to performances of Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried and Gotterdammerung in July 1931. Very well captioned and clear photographs, through out, maps, brochures postcards of the sets, Wagner family and stars of the performances etc. c.200 photographs, cards, and maps. One of the postcards shows Arturo Toscanini with Siegfried Wagner’s children. At the 1931 Festival Toscanini conducted Tannhauser and Parsifal. It is interesting to note that earlier in 1931 Toscanini refused to play the fascist anthem in Bologna and was "attacked, injured and repeatedly hit in the face". He never returned to the Bayreuth despite being asked by Hitler to the lead the Festival. Toscanini refused, illustrating one of his mottos: "Be democrats in life but aristocrats in art." Boards a little worn to extremities and ownership details to fron paste down, internally fine.
