George Peabody 1795 – 1869 American financier and philanthropist re Exhibition of 1862 1 page quarto dated 25 April 1860 to Peter le Neve Foster Secretary of the Society of Arts with their stamp. Sir, We have received your favour of 24th inst on the subject of the proposed International Exhibition of 1862 but beg to state that for the present we must defer being interested in the undertaking. If the government or people of the United States be desirous of engaging in the project we shall be happy to reconsider our present decision…George Peabody & Co. Peabody had stepped in ten years earlier to support the US section of the Great Exhibition but is declining this time – only four years previously his bank had suffered a financial crisis though it survived and it may not have been strong enough to lend its support. Peabody was one of the great philanthropists putting money into Education and housing. Envelope folds with mild grubbiness but VG
