VOLUME 1 (Vermuyden, Myddleton, Metcalf, Brindley et al) - 5th thousand, 1862, 484pp, frontispiece of Myddleton, engravings in the text; VOLUME II (Smeaton, Rennie & Telford) - 5th thousand, 1862, 502pp, frontispiece of Smeaton, engravings in the text; VOLUME III (George & Robert Stephenson) - 512pp, frontispiece of George Stephenson, engravings in the text; each bound in tan leather boards, spines with five raised bands and decorations and the Uppingham School device to the upper boards. Contents in excellent, tight condition, some foxing to each Volume and a school prize related inscription to Volume I, the boards with a little edge & corner wear, a little light scuffing and wear to the spines. Overall a handsome set of Smiles' seminal work on early engineers - the fourth and last volume on Boulton & Watt was not published until 1865.
