Linnaean Botany Illustrated Circa 1837

Date: c.1837

Linnaean Botany Illustrated Circa 1837 Manuscript album of illustrations of Linnaean Botany. Black embossed and gilt lined leather covered album, watermarked for 1837. All page edges gilt. Pp 124, of which 85 used, and with 27 well executed full page illustrations which have been glazed with gum Arabic. Approx 9.7 cm x 11.5 cm x 1.3 cm. In addition to the Linnaean exposition, there is a 32 pp section entitled “General Remarks On Painting”. The Botany section begins with plant structure and the parts of a flower, and moves on to the first eleven Linnaean classes, which are each illustrated with a named flower. Most illustration leaves have some offsetting , and also bleed through the leaves , probably due to the gum Arabic glaze. A further thirteen classes are illustrated, followed by delightful full page illustrations with additional text, and ending with the notes on painting. A very pleasing little manuscript.
