Alighieri, Dante

La Divina Commedia or The Divine Vision of Dante Alighieri in Italian & English. The Italian text edited by Mario Casella of the University of Florence with the English version of H. F. Cary and 42 illustrations after the drawings by Sandro Botticelli.

Published: London, The Nonesuch Press

Date: 1928

Limited edition. #781 of 1475 copies. Rebound in full tan niger morocco, gilt, by Henry Sotheran, apparently to match the publisher’s binding on the set of Shakespeare’s Works (1929-33) which was another highlight of the Nonesuch Press. Top edge gilt. New endpapers. Double page illustrations from Botticelli’s drawings in Berlin and Rome.

Originally issued in an orange-stained, full vellum binding which is now often found faded and warped. This rebinding is sumptuous, sympathetic and attractive.
