JUVENILE DRAWING BOOK WITH ISLE OF WIGHT INTEREST

Published: Unpublished manuscript

ANON: Album of juvenile pencil drawings and watercolour paintings produced on the Isle of Wight. Watermark for 1815, and also a portrait of (we think) the young Victoria, suggesting a date nearer to 1840. Some of the work is quite accomplished, and it might be that the album had one owner who added to it over time. There are sixteen pencil drawings with Isle of Wight locations including the Needles, Ryde pier, Blackgang Chine, the Sand-Rock Spring Cottage, the Undercliff, a Freshwater Caverns etc.The album is approx 31.5 cm. x 25.5 cm. The drawings have a strong Folk-Art appeal, the more accomplished watercolours have a similar appeal. The album starts from both ends. Two school-room pen drawings might give a clue to an owner for the works .A school mistress tells off her pupils – one speech bubble says “ take a bad mark Miss Isabella Friend” . Condition is Very Good overall. There is some light foxing (from tissue guards, now removed) and evidence of a few excised pages.
