Journal of Katherine Mansfield (1927)

MANSFIELD, Katherine; MIDDLETON MURRY, J. (editor)

Journal of Katherine Mansfield

Published: Constable & Co. Ltd

Date: 1927

First edition. Crown 8vo (20cm), pp. (xvi), (252). Textured grey cloth with blue stamped lettering and ruling to spine and upper board. Slight lean to spine. Wear and light bruising to head and tail of spine. Feps browned, occasional light foxing to text block. Else, a clean, tight copy of this scarce first edition. Murry, Mansfield's husband, played a key role in sculpting the author's literary image after her early death in 1923, and not without criticism by contemporaries, one of whom described it as 'boiling Katherine's bones to make soup' (cited in Tomalin, p. 241). The Journal was part of the successful 'publishing campaign' Murry undertook with Constable, which ran throughout the 1920s, and beyond.
