First edition. Signed by the Author. 8vo, pp. 287, (1) + b/w portrait frontis and plates. Sage green linen boards with dark green gilt-framed title panel with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt- and green-stamped decorative ruling to upper board. Top edge green. Light bruising to head of spine, title panel ever so slightly rubbed. Inscription to ffep: 'With Regards, Leslie Hale'. 'Now & Then' Cape postcard laid-in. A near fine copy. In VG illustrated DJ – all four corners of flaps clipped, original price remains; toning to spine and back cover, light edgewear. A handsome copy, rare with Hale's signature. Curran (1750-1817) was a celebrated Irish orator and lawyer, who also served as an MP, and Master of the Rolls in Ireland. In his lifetime, he was well-known for his defense of political prisoners and lost causes; Byron called him 'the most wonderful person I ever saw' (inner flap). Hale (1902-1985) practised as a solicitor before becoming Labour MP for Oldham and West Oldham, the latter seat he held until 1968.
