Brown cloth boards with gilt lettering and illustration of Carter drawing with a pencil in his mouth to front cover, no dustwrapper. Aeg. 10ins x 7.5ins, xxii, pps 9 to 64, ii, 27pp plates. (25 drawings, 2pp of letter writing). John Carter (1815-1850) fell from a tree in 1836 and became paralysed. He earnt a living by drawing with a pencil in his mouth. This new edition contains more text pages and a much greater number of plates than the 1850 original. Scattered light foxing else VG.
