Five manuscript school notebooks.

Date: [ 1865 ]

RAIN, Thomas. Manuscript school notebooks, 5volumes, including copy writing arithmetics, and copy books, and a painting book containing 10 watercolour paintings, presumably by Thomas Rain (ownership inscription in pen to front pastedown “Thomas Rain Printing Book Ainstable ,with pencil addition “March 22 1865”). The images include “The Policeman and the Offender”, “Dray Horses”, “The little Beggar Boy”, “Tim Jenks the Soldier taking a walk with his cane in hand" etc. A delightful manuscript with naive paintings which reflect the interests of a schoolboy of the day.Two of the volumes have slight rubbing to covers, the three other volumes with much wear and covers missing. The painting book is in good condition, with an engraved card cover showing Tam O’ Shanter with accompanying rhyming text. The other notebook retaining its covers, has an engraved image of a peacock and another of a “Marmozet” monkey. There are also handwritten titles in ink. Approx 20.5 x 16.5 cms and various sizes. Ainstable is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Cumbria, but we can find no mentions of Thomas Rain.
