Published: London :“News of the World”, printed by Hudson & Kearns,

Date: 1896

First collected edition, having originally been issued in 14 separate fascicles during 1895-96. Double crown 4to (38cm); 224 large photographic plates depicting the best-known football and rugby players of the day alongside famous teams and administrators. Crimson red publisher’s sand-grained cloth with a gilt figure of a footballer dribbling the ball below gilt title lettering framed in a pennant. Apart from a few minor blemishes to the cloth boards and a tiny section of splitting near the head of the spine on the back panel, this is a really bright and solid copy, with all plates clean. NB: AS THIS IS A LARGE AND HEAVY BOOK AN EXTRA POSTAGE CHARGE MAY APPLY

Each large leaf has the portrait photograph of a footballer, or team group, on one face, and a rugby player on the other, along with a printed example of the player’s autograph and a brief biography; “Father of Football” Alcock wrote those for the round ball players while George Rowland Hill covered the oval ball merchants.
