[TOMLINSON, Charles.]

Essays by an octogenarian.

Published: London: printed for the author by Geo. Reveirs, 1892.

16cm. [182]pp.

This collection of essays was written by Tomlinson whilst living in Highgate. They cover the period 1888-1892 and stray well away from the scientific material published during his most productive period. There is a reflective and philosophical tone - probably befitting a man of advanced years. Charles Tomlinson published his ‘Essays old and new’ in 1887. ‘Essays of an octogenarian’ was first published in 1888 by way of a supplement to the 1887 title; the work here is a ‘new issue [adding] four essays that have been written since 1888.’ Each essay has its own title-page and pagination and would appear to have been published separately; this is verified by the location of the two Cardinal Newman pamphlets at University College, London. No record has been found of the collection or of the other 13 pamphlets.

Wraps lightly spotted and soiled. Author’s presentation inscription to head of front wrap with additional item to title-page list in the same hand.

Original grey-paper wraps with MS. title (by the author?) to front wrap.
