Note
Edited by A.-H. de Sallengre. With his "Discours sur la Vie & les Ouvrages de Mr De Meziriac". Contains Bachet's "Discours de la traduction à l'Académie Françoise", the first systematic study of translation errors and one of the founding texts of translation studies. In "De la Traduction", Bachet analyses with linguistic and didactic precision Amyot's translation of Plutarch's "Vies des hommes illustres" and comes up with two thousand erroneously translated passages. Michel Ballard, points to Bachet's "Discours" as the true emergence of translation studies. The first part (all published) of the Epistles of Ovid is followed in vol. 2 by Bachet's "Epitre de la Vierge Marie à Jésus" in Latin verse, sacred and secular poetry in Latin and his "Rime Toscane" in Italian.

Allegorical copper engraved frontispice by François van Bleyswyck with mediallion-portraits, repeated in vol. 2, engraved printer's mark representing a printer's workshop on both title-pages, woodcut headbands and tailpieces.
