Folio,[xlviii], 514,  p.,  leaves of plates (3 folded) . The plates comprise a frontispiece portrait of Gronovius by van Zylvelt, 6 plates of Roman coins, 7 medallion portraits of later Roman emperors,plus a portrait of Procopius, a folding plate of the view of all four sides of the 'Obeliscus Ramessaeus', and two folding battle scenes by Romeyn de Hooghe, showing the battle of Strasbourg and the siege of Amida. Bound in original panelled calf, worn, corners frayed and bumped, spine replaced in Victorian times with a pebble grain leather. Inside, the gutter margins are starting although the boards are still firmly attached.
Endpapers replaced when respined but front and rear original blanks are still present. Ownership inscriptions to first blank, and one repeated on the red and black printed title. Internally this is a crisp copy with minimal foxing and toning, the plates generally bright and clean.
An uncommon copy of this seventeenth-century edition of the histories of Ammianus Marcellinus, edited by the Dutch classical scholar Jacobus Grovonius [Jacob Gronow (1645 1716) Latin text. In effect,Marcellinus wrote a continuation of the history of Tacitus, covering the period from 353 to 378.
